Abstract
Purpose : To evaluate the efficacy of proximal femoral nail (PFN) compared with dynamic hip screw (DHS) for intertrochanteric fractures.

Materials and Methods : From October 2000 to October 2001, 56 cases of intertrochanteric fracture were treated with either proximal femoral nail (group 1, 31 cases) or dynamic hip screw (Group 2,25 cases). We evaluated the operating time, blood loss, transfusion, duration of hospital stay and time to bone union, in the two groups. The average was 68.8 years in Group 1 and 65.9 years in Group 2. The mean duration of follow-up was 10 months.

Results : The mean operating time was shortened, and the mean blood loss and the mean transfusion were decreased in Group 1 (P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the mean duration of hospital stay, in the mean time to bone union, or in the degree of complications between Group 1 and Group 2.

Conclusion : Proximal femoral nailing could be a preferable method in treatment of peritrochanteric fractures.
